Research suggests that 4 out of every 5 people have lower back pain at some point in their lives.
Lower back pain is a frustrating but common symptom of a variety of issues. It can prevent you from being active, working out, playing sports or even going to work. In fact, back pain is one of the most frequent reasons for people being unable to work. Physical therapy is one of the most efficient and healthy routes toward healing lower back pain. Under the care of a physical therapist, you can get rid of your pain while healing injuries and preventing them from reoccurring.
Symptoms of Chronic Lower Back Pain
Beyond the discomfort of chronic lower back pain, there are a variety of additional symptoms that are often present which can make the condition easy to self diagnose. The pain can be located solely in the lower back region but often can extend down the legs with either an aching or shooting, sharp pain. An additional symptom that is commonly present is a sense of tingling like sharp needles or numbness that can extend from the lower back down to even the feet. If the condition is severe enough it can cause muscle spasms in your lower back that can occasionally range into your hips. While these symptoms can make chronic lower back pain easy to self diagnose, it is important to seek treatment with a physical therapist in order to prevent permanent damage.
Causes of Back Pain
Back pain can be caused by a large number of conditions or injuries. Some of the major causes are muscle sprains, nerve damage, or years of poor posture. If not frequently exercised or stretched back muscles can become tight with disuse which often leads to injury with sudden movement or strain. There are more serious conditions such as scoliosis or herniated discs that can also contribute to back pain. It's important to make sure that you are moving and working out to increase your mobility and prevent overuse in order to avoid back pain or injuries.
