Despu\u00e9s de un r\u00e1pido crecimiento en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, la epidemia de opioides se encuentra ahora entre las principales causas de muerte en los Estados Unidos. Los opioides, una categor\u00eda de medicamentos que incluye analg\u00e9sicos recetados, mataron a m\u00e1s de 28.000 personas en 2014, y la tasa de sobredosis se triplic\u00f3 desde 2000, seg\u00fan el\u00a0Centros de Control y Prevenci\u00f3n de Enfermedades<\/a>. Casi dos millones de estadounidenses abusaron o eran dependientes de estas drogas en 2014.<\/p>\n

Aunque ya se hab\u00eda retrasado mucho, el tema finalmente est\u00e1 pasando a un primer plano tanto en los gobiernos federales como en los estatales. El Senado aprob\u00f3 recientemente un proyecto de ley integral, mientras que la C\u00e1mara aprob\u00f3 18 proyectos de ley relacionados con los opioides, y varios estados ya han adoptado pol\u00edticas para reducir la prescripci\u00f3n de opioides.<\/p>\n

Si bien el gobierno federal puede marcar la mayor diferencia ampliando los programas de tratamiento de alta calidad, los estados, que tienen m\u00e1s m\u00e9dicos y hospitales, pueden reducir la prescripci\u00f3n de opioides alentando a los m\u00e9dicos a solicitar tratamientos alternativos para el dolor, como la fisioterapia.<\/p>\n

Cuando se trata de dolor de cuello, espalda y cuello \u00fanicamente, solo 1-2% de los pacientes con dolor lumbar que buscan tratamiento tienen un trastorno grave y requieren cirug\u00eda, mientras que 5-10% de los pacientes justifican una mayor investigaci\u00f3n mediante im\u00e1genes. Eso significa que a un enorme 90% de pacientes que sufren de dolor de cuello y espalda les ir\u00eda mejor a largo plazo con educaci\u00f3n e intervenci\u00f3n espec\u00edficas de un fisioterapeuta. Actualmente, muchos de estos pacientes reciben tratamiento con opioides, im\u00e1genes m\u00e9dicas y cirug\u00edas.<\/p>\n
